Appeal

Wim van Zanten and Corrie Tijssen-Rieken, ex 'flower children' of 1945 and now in the
sixties and seventies, would like to unit these children and any living relatives that may have kept in touch with each other over the years. Their aim is to commemorate the Battle of Arnhem in 2004 together. |
In September 2004 the 60th Commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem will take place
in Oosterbeek and Arnhem.
The annual placing of flowers by schoolchildren during the memorial service at the Arnhem-
Oosterbeek War Cemetery is probably the emotional high point of each commemoration, especially for the veterans of the Battle of Arnhem and the relatives of those who have given their lives.
The placing of flowers by 'flower children' took place for the first time in 1945 when about 1200 children each have adopted a grave, kept it clear of weeds and placed flowers at regular intervals. Many strong bands between the
'flower children' of 1945 and the relatives of their adopted grave were built up over the years and many continue to do so to the present day.

Commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem 2004
Dear Sir,
In September 2004 the 60th Commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem will take place in Oosterbeek and Arnhem and at the present time many events are now already being planned, thought out or on the drawing board.
In 1945 over 1200 Dutch schoolchildren each have adopted a grave at the Arnhem-Oosterbeek War Cemetery, kept it clear of weeds and placed flowers at regular intervals.
After the War Graves Commission had replaced the original iron crosses with the present grave stones and the official staff at the cemetery had taken on the care of the graves, the
children's task was over, but every year since at the memorial service children of the local schools place flowers on each grave, a very emotional moment for the veterans of the battle and the relatives of the killed. A continuation of the care and thoughts of the children of
59 years ago.
Many strong bands between the 'flower children' of 1945 and the relatives of their adopted graves were built up over the years and many continue to do so to the present day.
A few years ago the Arnhem 1944 Veterans Club erected a memorial to commemorate these children. This memorial can be seen on the lefthand side of the approach to the cemetery
gates.
We have drawn up enclosed appeal and you will find our poster as well. If you write a cover of this
year's commemoration, we would be very grateful if you will pay attention to this appeal.
We shall be pleased to give you any further information you require.
Your sincerely,
Wim van Zanten
